Commissioned by Khunfus Publishing House for their upcoming publication, A Wild Companion: Sarawat & Hijaz, artists were asked to pick a species and present an artistic interpretation to be included in the published book.

Hydrostatic Prelude for a Falling Egg is a blend of orchestral and electronic elements, capturing the fleeting yet infinite moment when a tree frog egg falls from a leaf into the water. Delicate arpeggios intent to mimic a sense of eternity in that brief instant, while subtle frog sounds, not specifically from the Arabian tree frog, help recreate the ambiance of their natural habitat.

Closeness of the Red Tide
2025In collaboration with Saudi researcher and writer Nouf Al-Harthi¹¹, Closeness of the Red Tide is a performance commissioned by Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale. In the work, Nouf reflects on the lifecycle of Trichodesmium, a bacterium found in large bodies of water and historically believed to have given the Red Sea its name. The accompanying sonic composition responds to the biological transformations, mirroring moments of tension as well as release.
In Nouf’s research, the lifecycle of Trichodesmium could be observed through ten stages of biological change—understanding these changes informed the method of sound production as it did the poetic writing.

While writing and composition happened simultaneously, neither creative outlet influenced the other during the creation period. It was extremely important to both processes to try to keep from imposing personal views or imprinting any emotion, an unspoken agreement to remain respectful of the bacterium without humanizing it.
